Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal and his deputy, Honourable Emeka Ihedioha, on Sunday, distanced themselves from the posters donning various streets of Abuja, purported to be promoting their alleged presidential and vice presidential bid, under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 elections.
Tambuwal’s denial of the posters was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam, in which he thanked those who placed the posters for considering him fit for elective office, but advised them not to breach the laws of the land.
According to his media aide, “while we thank them for deeming the Honourable Speaker fit for future elective office in the country, let it be known that since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not given the go-ahead for those interested in elective positions to start mobilisation, it is inappropriate for any person or group to print campaign posters and have them placed in strategic locations in any part of the country.
“Laws of the Federation are meant to be obeyed by all persons irrespective of their societal status. As a law-abiding citizen, the Honourable Speaker will make known the direction of his political future and intention at the appropriate time,” he stated.
Chief Press Secretary to the deputy speaker, Mr Oke Epia, in a statement issued on behalf of his principal, maintained that, “this comes to the deputy speaker as laughable and completely nonsensical. Especially so, when the said posters came at a time Honourable Ihedioha is on party assignment with the president and leader of the party, the national chairman and other top stalwarts of the PDP in Osogbo, Osun State for the grand rally of the party for the August 9 governorship election.”
The statement read in part: “The general public is hereby urged to ignore the posters and see this incident as the handiwork of mischief makers who are advised to find better things to do with their time and resources.”
