The crisis in the Kaduna State House of Assembly took a new dimension on Tuesday with the emergence of two speakers, following the impeachment of speaker Mua’azu Gangara and the appointment of a new speaker, Shehu Usman Tahir.
Nineteen members had earlier in the day removed Gangara at a sitting where both the speaker and his deputy, Mr Dogara Matoh, were absent.
The lawmakers, led by a Peoples Democratic Party member, representing Makera State Constituency, Mr. Phelimon Gidanmana, also appointed Tahir (PDP-Giwa West), as the new Speaker.
Gangara, however, led 15 other members of the House, including the principal officers of the 34-member Assembly to announce that he remained the Speaker, insisting that those who impeached him, did not meet the constitutional provision for the removal of a Speaker or his deputy.
The Minority Leader of the House, Dr. Shehu Adamu, alleged that there were unconfirmed reports that the state governor, Mukthar Yero, met with some of the legislators on Monday and promised them a reward of N10m each to impeach the speaker.
