A day after they were removed from office by President Goodluck Jonathan, some of the sacked aviation chiefs had their travelling documents seized by security operatives yesterday.
The latest action fuelled speculations that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions (EFCC) may swoop on them with a view to ascertaining alleged financial impropriety that a source said arose from avalanche of petitions against some of them. A source, who is very close to one of the sacked chief executives, told New Telegraph that securitymen had seized their passports and other travel documents.
According to the source: “Panic has gripped virtually all of them. I was just informed that security operatives collected their travel documents. Nobody knows the reason for this action, but it shows that they might be asked to give account of their stewardship. Let us hope it is just a routine for them to clarify some grey areas in application of funds on some projects”.
Jonathan had on Tuesday sacked the Managing Directors of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Mr. Nnamdi Udoh, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), George Uriesi and the Director- General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Folayele Akinkuotu. Others were the Rector, Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Capt. Chinyere Kalu.
The Commissioner, Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), Captain Muktar Usman, replaces Akinkuotu. The Director-General of Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Dr. Anthony Anuforom retains his position.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Air Traffic Engineers (NAAE), an umbrella body of aircraft engineers, has commended Jonathan for demonstrating continuity of the ongoing transformation agenda of the government by appointing a seasoned engineer as the managing director of NAMA. A statement signed by NAAE Secretary, Ojar Opah, stated that the appointment of Ibrahim Abdusalam, a highly-rated air traffic safety electronics personnel, would consolidate on the gains of the on-going process and continue the transformation.
