FASHOLA BANS SKATING ON HIGHWAYS

Worried by the
indiscriminate skating by youths on the highways and other unauthorised places
in Lagos State, Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday outlawed indiscriminate
skating. Fashola said henceforth, skaters in illegal places would be arrested.
The governor urged
skaters to do skating in designated places like recreation centres, stadia,
even Tafawa Balewa Square and other places suitable for the sporting
activities. He said skating on major roads, streets, etc, contravened the law,
adding that offenders would be dealt with.

Speaking at the induction
of the new Traffic Mayors in the state, Fashola said the safety on the roads
enabled by the implementation of Lagos Traffic 2012 should not be abused by
indiscriminate activities of skaters. The governor called on parents to
discourage their wards from skating on major roads and highways to avert
needles road crashes.
He said: “Our young
children have also taken to skating because the road is safe. We aren’t
discouraging them from doing so. But they should do that in designated places
like recreation centres, stadia, TBS and others.
“They cannot skate on the
high ways. It is the violation of the Traffic Law 2010. I implore all parents
to call their children and wards to order because any child found skating on
the highway will be arrested and will be brought to justice. “It must stop
today. Skating on the highway has to stop now.
The danger is too much
and it is the responsibility of the government to safe life.” Fashola therefore
urged motorists to be cautious while on the wheel, saying the two accident
cases recorded in Ajah and Isolo- Oshodi in the last two days called for the
need for motorists to be safety conscious.
The governor added that
ongoing construction of 200 inner-city roads across the state might come with
some challenges of gridlock but assured that those challenges would soon be
over. He said: “The truth is that vehicles don’t drive themselves but it is people
who do. And government don’t drive car, it is the citizens.
The more we pay attention
to road safety measures, the better it will be. “Over the last few days, we
have begun to experience gridlock within the state. There are couples of
factors that we all must be aware. “We promised to address inner roads and at
the moment we are on Joel Ogunnaike, Kodesho and others.
The access to those roads
will definitely be impaired. That is part of the problem. “Also, we are getting
closer to the Christmas and New Year. At this time, there is heavy movement of
people at the same time on the road.”
