Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, is getting increasingly uncomfortable with the constant leakage of decisions taken at the bank’s board meetings to the public domain, THISDAY can reveal today.
An insider source who would not want to be named told THISDAY that the need to control such unguarded and unauthorised leakage within the apex bank played a role in the overall decision to implement best practice through the newly-launched information security management system in the organisation.
According to a source: “One of the things that bordered the central bank governor at some point is that for instance, they have a board meeting now and what they have discussed in that meeting is in the public domain the next moment. Come on, how did that happen? Before you know what’s happening it’s on saharareporters.”
As a result, in subsequent investigations launched to address the issue, it was discovered, among other things, that the lack of document classification is one of the reasons why information is often leaked from the organisation.
“It is all about how every single organisation can protect information within and I believe this is what is going to strengthen this nation,” the source added. However, the source explained that new measures put in place at the apex bank would gag the staff from junior to senior official from careless exposure of official matters including exposure of any detail of workplace activities even in an informal circumstance.
Similarly, it was also suggested that the implementation of information security apparatus in the telecommunications sector could be the panacea for the barrage of unsolicited text message often received by mobile phone subscribers in the country.
The source said: “Sometimes, you receive unsolicited text on your phone and the question you ask yourself is how do they get my details? “It is because this culture change is not inherent within those organisations and that’s why people just take your data and share with the third party.
“And that is why as a country, we must embrace standards, it does matter who you are; government agency, private organisation…for us to improve we must embrace global standards.
“By the time we implement some of these things in the telcos, you find that the day they share your data to a third party, you have a right to legally engage them.”
