ALAMIEYESIEGHA RESTORED PEACE IN N’DELTA –PRESIDENCY

Date:

As
opposition the controversial pardon granted to former governor of Bayelsa
State, Diepreye Alamieyesiegha rages on, the Presidency has come out with a new
twist. According to the Special Adviser to the President on Inter-Party
Affairs, Senator Ben Obi, Alamieyesiegha was granted pardon because he worked
to restore peace in the Niger Delta region. He challenged northern leaders to
replicate same, especially on the state of insecurity in their region.
Obi made the remarkin Abuja yesterday at the launch of FEWZ
Magazine. Obi maintained that Alamieyesiegha had paid for “his sins” and must
be forgiven on the basis of his contribution to the current peace in the South
South zone of the country. He noted that if northern leaders could replicate
the same peaceful moves in their region, the terrorism being unleashed by Boko
Haram and other splinter groups would be checkmated.

He said: “This man (Alamieyeseigha) has sinned and has been
punished. Moreover, he has since then helped to bring about peace in Nigeria,
which is one of the basic reasons he was pardoned. “I will also want to see
people who will come out from the North no matter what and help bring peace in
the northern region. Let us have peace, let us see who is who from the region
please.
“Boko Haram has done so much damage to the economy of the North
that it would require to rebuild the economy of the North. From this standpoint
(of insecurity), it will be difficult to ensure democratic stability. So at the
end of the day, what we are saying is that we need a lot of tranquility across
the length and breath of this country.” “So I think the pardon was done with
the contribution of the members of the council. It is always good for people to
understand the crux of the matter. It is also not about the issue of DSP
Alamieyeseigha, as he is not the only one pardoned,” he explained.
On the call for Amnesty for members of Boko Haram sect by
prominent northern personalities including the Sultan of Sokoto, the
presidential aide said such call should be backed with understanding of how it
intends to end terrorism. He further stated that members of the group had not
shown any sign of remorse concerning their acts, but had gone ahead to unleash
terror on members of the public.
Obi also condemned yesterday attack as an act of cowardice on
the part of the perpetrators. He said: “Its highly condemnable after all the
gesture and hand of understanding the government is extending to them, the
terrorists and Boko Haram still believe in killing innocent people. “It is a
coward act when you go to the bus stop to blow up people who wanted to travel
from one destination to the other, and then you blow them up like that. This
does not show any intent of courage but an act of cowardice.”
