In view of the lull in the nation’s economy, the Federal Government on Tuesday said the 55th Independence Anniversary will be low-key.
This is just as President Muhammadu Buhari approved N70m to be spent in organising the anniversary.
Also, the Federal Government announced the programme to mark the anniversary.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engr. Babachir David Lawal disclosed this when he briefed journalists in his Abuja office.
The SGF spoke through the Permanent Secretary, Political Matters office, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote.
According to the SGF, due to the state of the nation’s finance, this year’s anniversary must be low-key.
He said Buhari had made it a policy that it would be unfair to spend so much in celebrating at the expense of ordinary Nigerians who are grappling with poverty.
