The attention of Delta State Police Command has been drawn to a news report with the caption “Delta Police Spokesperson Bribed to Exonerate Okowa’s Hit Man“, posted by Sahara Reporters on July, 19, 2015. Ordinarily, we wouldn’t have bothered to respond to the malicious and fallacious report, coming from an organ that is known for false hood to tarnish the image of the Police PRO, and by extension, Delta State Police Command, but in order to set the record straight for the reading public, so that they will not be confused or disturbed, the truth about this matter is as follows: 1. During the April, 11 2015 Governorship election at Ibusa, one Emeka Onianwa ‘m’ was allegedly murdered by one Innocent Esewezie ‘m’. The Police on receipt of the report investigated the matter and established a case against twelve (12) persons including Chief Fred Ajuduwa, Princess Ajuduwa, Innocent Esewezie and nine others. Attempt to arraign all the suspects in court was halted as a result of court order, while those already arraigned were granted bail by the court. The Police is making effort to set the order aside through its lawyers. 2. From the foregoing, it should be clear to those who are familiar with how the Police and judiciary operate to understand that the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP. Celestina Kalu could not have been in a position to take bribe and exonerate a suspect whose case is already in court, as she is neither an investigator nor a prosecutor in the case. More so, her schedule of duty as the Public Relations officer does not include investigating criminal cases or exonerating suspects, but to build a bridge of understanding between the Police and the public by informing members of the public about what the Police do to promote peace, security and safety in the state. 3.We wish therefore, to advise the public to disregard this report by Sahara Reporters, as mere speculation and malicious attempt to malign the PPRO and the Command for doing their job; while assuring Deltans that the Police Command will continue to discharge its constitutional duties with every sense of responsibility and Commitment to the cause of justice. 4.Finally, we wish to advise Sahara Reporters that news medium which engages in spreading deliberate falsehood does not add any value to the society.
