ABUJA—The National Judicial Council, NJC, at the end of an emergency meeting it held in Abuja yesterday, said it would not rest until those that masterminded the attacks on two judges in Ekiti State were arrested and prosecuted.
The Council, in a statement that was signed by its Acting Director of Information, Mr. Soji Oye, requested the Inspector-General of Police to personally “take-over and investigate the alleged attacks on Hon. Justices John Adeyeye and Isaac Olusegun Ogunyemi, some members of staff of the court and vandalization of property of the High Court of Justice, Ado-Ekiti and bring the culprits to justice”.
The meeting which was held at the NJC headquarters situated inside the Supreme Court complex at the Three-Arms-Zone in Abuja, was chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar herself.
“Following the recent unfortunate and worrisome incidents in Ekiti State Judiciary, particularly in the High Court Complex, Ado-Ekiti, the National Judicial Council held an emergency meeting on October 2, 2014, under the Chairmanship of Hon. Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, GCON, and considered the various complaints and petitions forwarded to it. At the end of the meeting, Council decided as follows:
*In very strong terms condemned the attacks on the judiciary and judicial officers in general across the country and in particular, the one carried out in High Court Complex, Ado-Ekiti on 22nd and 25th September, 2014.
*Requested the Inspector General of Police to take over and investigate the alleged attacks on Hon. Justices John Adeyeye and Isaac Olusegun Ogunyemi, some members of staff of the court and vandalisation of property of the High Court of Justice, Ado-Ekiti and bring the culprits to justice .
*Requested the Inspector-General of Police as a matter of urgency to provide adequate security to judicial officers and the judiciary in Ekiti State. iv) All petitions forwarded by all parties to the Council on the matter are being looked into”, the statement read.
It will be recalled that both the governor-elect of Ekiti State,Mr. Ayodele Fayose and the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ayodeji Daramola had separately sent petitions to the NJC.
Meanwhile, whereas Fayose, in his own petition, denied leading thugs into the Ekiti State High Court where a suit seeking to invalidate his election victory was being heard, he alleged that the outgoing governor of the state, Kayode Fayemi and his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, had already compromised all the Justices in the election petition tribunal.
On the other hand, the CJ, insisted that it was Fayose that led the thugs that turned the Ekiti State High Court premises into a theater of violence.Source: Vanguard
