The minister of environment, Mrs Laurencia Laraba Mallam, could not hold back her tears on Tuesday when she visited the mass grave of the 119 villagers killed by Fulani herdsmen in four communities of Kaura local government area in Kaduna State.
The minister, who wept alongside other women at the site of the mass grave, described the killing of 119 people as devastating.
Mrs Mallam, who spoke to over 2,000 homeless villagers, urged the people to remain calm and law-abiding, saying as the federal government was doing everything possible to bring the incessant attack to an end.
“I am saddened by the brutal, gruesome and mindless killings and destruction of property of innocent people, I am in great pains,” She said.
According to her, “I am saddened with the gruesome killing of my people. I am really devastated with these killings; I want to assure you that the government will do everything possible to ensure the safety of lives and property of its citizens.
“I want to assure you that Mr. President will do something about the situation. I don’t want you to take the laws into your hand by revenging. I want you to continue to pray to God, for God says vengeance is His. So live in peace and leave everything to Almighty God. I am assuring that the President will do something about this incident. By the time I go back and I give my report, something will be done.”
The vice chairman of Kaura local government, Mr.Daniel Anyip who also spoke after receiving the minister at the local government secretariat in Manchok, revealed that the attackers had always come from the neighbouring Riyom local government area of Plateau State.
He disclosed that “from the initial stage, 114 dead bodies were found after the attack, five more bodies were discovered the following day bringing the death toll to 119. Many people are still missing.
“They attackers always come through Riyom local government and do the attack and then run back. The military in Kaduna said they cannot pursue them across to Plateau State, as Plateau is not their area of jurisdiction.”
