Tears flowed freely yesterday in Okota, Isolo in Lagos when the residents heard that the former deputy editor-in chief/deputy managing director of the Sun Newspapers, Dimgba Igwe, was killed by a hit-and-run driver in the area.
LEADERSHIP Sunday investigation revealed that Igwe, who usually jogs to keep fit, was doing same when an unknown vehicle rammed into him in the early hours of the day.
Igwe, until his death, was the deputy editor- in- chief and managing director of Entertainment Express, an entertainment newspaper.
The late Igwe, who hailed from Igbere, in Abia State, was said to have left his residence very early in the morning jogging towards Akpata Memorial School when the vehicle snuffed life out of him.
The deceased, who lived side-by-side in a different duplex with his close friend and boss, Mike Awoyinfa, who was his boss in The Sun newspapers, never envisaged any danger when he left his house that morning.
According to one of the residents in the area who pleaded anonymity, Igwe liked regular exercise and he lived like an American or European because he jogged every day.
Awoyinfa and Igwe worked as editors with the rested Concord newspapers. Both were so close that they live next to each other in uniform residences in Okota.
When LEADERSHIP Sunday called one of the editors of Entertainment Express, Azuh Amatus on phone, he disclosed that the accident occurred close to Akpata Memorial School, Isolo in the morning. He said the vehicle, after killing Igwe, sped off.
He said Igwe was jogging when an unknown vehicle hit him. He said the whole staff of Entertainment Express were still mourning.
One of the residents, Akeem described Igwe as a good fellow that Nigeria needed to excel. He said he usually reads his column at the back of the Sun Newspapers, which he described, as selfless service and no hold bared.
Meanwhile, all efforts made to reach Awoyinfa and the president of Nigerian Guild of Editors and editor- in -chief/managing director of the Sun Newspapers, Mr Femi Adeshina on phone proved abortive because of network problem.
Many management staff of the Sun Newspapers declined any comment on the matter. Efforts made to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) Ngozi Braide to comment on the issue proved abortive because she refused to pick her calls. Several times, her mobile phones rang but she did not pick neither did she respond to the text message sent to her.
