HORROR IN KANO : HOW WE ESCAPED DEATH -POLIO WORKERS

Date:

The
few health workers who survived the attack by gumen on polio vaccinators in
Kano on Friday cheated death by lying down on the floor and pretending to have
been killed.
This was part of the revelations made by survivors in
interviews with our correspondents who visited them at  Abdullahi Wase
Specialist Hospital and the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano at the
weekend.

 Sunday
Trust gathered that the gunmen did not only shoot the health workers, they also
set fire on them to ensure no survivors were left.
Nine
female polio vaccinators lost their lives in two separate shootings at health
centres in Kano within an hour on Friday.
When
our reporters visited th hospitals, the survivors were too traumatised to talk.
Khadijah,
a 22-year-old Economics graduate of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano
said they all lay motionless as the gunmen wetted the place with Premium Motor
Spirit (petrol) and set fire to ensure that there were no survivors.
This
is the first time health workers in Kano have been so hounded.
Such
attacks said to be the handiwork of anti-western style of living, Jama’atu
Ahlis Sunnati Lidda’awati Wal Jihad commonly called Boko Haram, have been
against security agents and top public officials.
No
group has claimed responsibility yet.
