IG Petitioned Over Car Gift

Date:

Dumebi Kachikwu

THE outcome of a petition to the Inspector-General of Police could prove that not all luxury cars supplied to wealthy Nigerians are as new as sellers claim they are.
An Abuja-based businessman, Mr. Dumebi Kachikwu, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Mohammed, to investigate transactions between him and a popular car dealer, Mr. Larry Onuegbu, of Megapoint Automobiles in Lagos.

Kachikwu, in a petition dated July 28, 2012, accused Onuegbu of fraudulently supplying a refurbished 2009 model Porsche Cayenne car as wedding gift to his in-law, popular Nigerian hip-hop singer, Naeto C.

Onuegbu said he requested that a 2012 model of the car be supplied at a cost of N14m but the dealer turned up at the wedding venue with a 2009 model and without giving him opportunity to inspect the vehicle.
Titled, ‘Fraud and illegal tampering of motor vehicle against Mr. Larry Onuegbu, MD/CEO, Megapoint Automobiles Limited’ and signed by Kachikwu’s lawyer, Mr. Chukwuma Nwachukwu, the petition said Onuegbu’s action is not only criminal but also in contravention of Section 419 of the Criminal Code Act, CAP C38 Laws of the Federation 2004, which stipulates a jail term of between three and seven years.
Onuegbu had, in a statement published in a national paper yesterday (not The Guardian), demanded full payment for the Porsche Cayenne SUV, which he claimed he supplied at the instruction of the petitioner.
Kachikwu’s petition was also copied to the Special Fraud Unit, the INTERPOL and the Consular General, Embassy of the United States of America.
