Kano State Governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, yesterday signed the law prohibiting street begging in the state, just as the state government executed the marriage of 1,111 divorcees and widows.
The governor who signed the law during a reception organised for the 1,111 couples at the Government House said the bill was aimed at rehabilitating and empowering street beggars.
He said the state government had indentified 2,205 physically challenged persons that would be trained on different vocations.
“Some of the beggars will be incorporated into the state civil service while those who cannot work will be receiving a N10,000 monthly stipend,” he said as he warned that any beggar that violates the law would face the consequences as it had made provisions for serious sanctions.
On the wedding of the 1,111 widows and divorcees, Kwankwaso said it was part of his administration’s efforts to touch the lives of the people.
