The Republic of Niger has said that the Maryam Abacha American University in Niger (MAAUN) is recognized by law and fulfils all the required terms and regulations enforced in the country.
This was contained in a letter from Niger Embassy to Nigerian foreign affairs ministry.
The letter enjoined the ministry to forward the letter to competent authority, saying “in particular the National Universities Commission (NUC) which discredited the institution through articles published in Leadership and Thisday newspapers dated 16th July 2015.”
It also condemned the action saying “it is against the excellent relationships of cooperation which exists between the two countries in the field of education.”
NUC had previously commented on the status of the varsity through its spokesperson Ibrahim Usman Yakasai, saying “we never questioned the approval status of that university in Niger. We just raised issues of quality as pertaining Nigeria. We cannot guarantee the quality of their degree.”
He pointed out that the commission only scrutinize documents and admission letters which states that someone could go there and do part time offshore.
“It is not allowed in the country, we don’t allow offshore part time that is called cross border education” he said.
