National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mallam Adamu Mu’azu has released his agenda as the national chairman of the party, stating that impunity must give way for rule of law and internal democracy and reforms in the party.
He also included as part of the agenda ensuring that the second term ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan is realised within the due process and rule of the ballot box in 2015.
He was speaking in an exclusive interview with THISDAY shortly after his ratification as the national chairman. According to Muazu, the ratification is part of the process to ensure that the rule of law and party politics is enthroned at all cost.
“The PDP as the most popular party within the sub Saharan Africa cannot promote democracy where there is impunity and lack of respect for constituted authority,” he said. “This is why my chairmanship went for the ratification of my tenure since January 15 when the National Executive Committee (NEC) elected me as the national chairman. Some national chairmen of some political parties will not allow for this to happen, but to ensure the promotion of rule of law, it happened.”
On party primary issues, Muazu said, “We want to ensure that any fallout as a result of the recently concluded primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party and the ones conducted at Eagle Square Special National Convention of the party on December 10 and 11, 2014 are handled within the ambits of the party constitution and rule of law. We shall reconcile each member of our party with the party in each of the 36 states and the FCT.
“We are also working hard to ensure that we campaign for the party from door to
door throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ensure that the populace is reminded of the achievements of our government in the last 15 years.
“It is very difficult to carry out so many primaries, so no matter how hard you work, there is always somebody trying to be more cleverer than you, but as this is also a learning process for our democracy, we shall ensure that future primaries are better than what has happened but even to a large extent, this present one has been a great success.”
On Nigerian politics, Muazu said: “Politics is a game and in every game, there is a winner and a loser, but in everything we do, we must agree that Nigeria remain one single entity and we must ensure that in everything we do, we do it in the best interest of our country and the common good. We must agree that Nigeria must remain one united Federal Republic.”
On providing party leadership, the newly confirmed national chairman of PDP, said, “There is leadership in our party and we are doing our very best to deepen democracy in the PDP. Anybody who conducts an illegal primary can be sure that it will not be regarded. We don’t even recognise it. Human element is such that there are selfish instincts which lead people to try to outsmart party authorities, but we have sufficient mechanism to deal with such situation when it occurs. Our party leadership has the political will to impose decency and proper conduct throughout the party structure.
“Whatever programme we do in the various political parties, we must ensure that it is in the best interest of Nigerian people and this is the only way forward for the progress of the country,” he said.
