Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, are set to begin a probe of the N76 billion moribund police Close Circuit Television, CCTV project, awarded to a Chinese firm, ZTE Corporation.
A senior official of the EFCC in Abuja told Nigerian Pilot that a former minister of Police Affairs, one-time Inspector-General of Police, IGP, the ministry’s permanent secretary when the contract was awarded and five directors would be quizzed over the failed contract.
The source disclosed that the commission had already summoned the petitioner, Mr. Olugbenga Adeyemi, to appear before the investigating team on June 18, 2014 for further information.
The human rights lawyer had asked the Commission, in a petition, dated May 8, 2014, to probe and prosecute those involved in the alleged scam, in the face of the increased terror attacks in Abuja and other places where the cameras were supposed to cover and assist security agencies to check the activities of terrorists.
He had asked a Federal High Court in Abuja for an order of mandamus, seeking to compel the EFCC to act, with the judge, Justice Adeniyi Ademola, granting him leave to commence the process.
The commission, however, responded it had launched a probe into the matter after the order was granted.
Those listed to cooperate with the EFCC during its probe of the controversial contract are the President, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, the Nigeria Police, Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nigeria Communication Commission, NCC, ZTE Corporation and Nigeria Communication Satellite Limited.
The court, however, substituted the President with the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF.
