Speaking at a One-Day Stakeholders Session on the scheme held in
Sokoto, the DG maintained that the new identification number would ensure
socio-economic security for holders.

While assuring that the new synchronised systemic network of
database would guarantee comprehensive and acceptable information on both
Nigerians and foreigners who have stayed in the country for long, he
revealed that, it is not a citizenship certification but a comprehensive
database designed for the population.

Department Alhaji Abdulaziz Aliyu, the DG assured that, the scheme has started
across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.

He noted that, the exercise is going to be a continuous one. In
addition, the National Identity number would be issued to all Nigerians above
the age of 16 before it is subsequently enforced.

According to him, “Each Nigerian registered will be given a
unique number to be generated randomly and it will be useful in the provision
of all public services”.

The director general also stressed that, the system will enhance
the security of the nation, improve socio economic activities, human rights and
the general well being of Nigerians.

represented by special adviser ICT, Alhaji Nasiru Zarumai, while commending the
commission for initiating the scheme, also assured of continued active
participation and partnership with the federal government to ensure the success
of the exercise.
