About 1.1 million cubic feet of gas is flared in the oil rich Niger Delta region in Nigeria daily. This amount of gas is enough to power 20 million households in the country, an expert Mr. Peter Jenson has said.
Speaking at a meeting with members of the Senate Committee on gas yesterday in Abuja, Mr. Jenson who is the Chief Executive Officer of Soprise Impact Organisation, an Oil and Gas consultancy firm based in Europe and America told the lawmakers that if the gas already wasted in the Niger Delta were properly harnessed, would have addressed the power problems of the entire African continent.
“We are here to seek the support of the Senate Committee on gas in partnering with the Federal Government on how to attract investors into the Nigerian gas sector to improve power supply, create more jobs and stop pollution in the Niger Delta region,” he said.
Jensen said his firm will hold a Gas Conference in Nigeria on 12 March, 2014, with the aim of “Deepening Domestic Gas Implementation”.
He said expressed that the quality of experts’ presentations on the subject matter would assist policy makers and investors to take advantage of the abundant gas in the country and commit enormous resources to process it.
The committee’s chairperson Senator Nkechi Nwogu (PDP, Abia) who commended the firm for its effort in tackling gas flaring in Nigeria assured them of the senate’s support.
