The All Progressives Congress, APC, has said that over 300,000 delegates from 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory will decide the fate of the party’s presidential aspirants at its national convention expected to hold in November.
The party also said that the recent defection of former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, where he is aspiring to govern Adamawa State, would not negatively impact on the electoral fortunes of the opposition party.
Speaking to the media shortly after the party’s National Executive Committee meeting, APC’s spokesperson, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that the party would adopt a delegate convention where over 300,000 delegates will decide the fate of the presidential aspirants, while the state congresses will be through modified direct primaries.
Former vice president Atiku Abubarkar, former military head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), and Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, are among the leading aspirants for the party’s presidential ticket.According to Mohammed, who said that the primaries will kick off as from October said, “we would want to ensure the participation of a large members of our people to what we called modified direct primaries at the ward, local government and state primaries.
We called it modified direct primaries even though we know the constraints of lining up members on a queue particularly in the northern states.
But in the states, we are not going to use delegate primaries because we want to be sure that we are different and show how transparent we can be.”
He said that it would accredit over 300.000 delegates for the presidential primaries as such number will make it difficult for anyone to manipulate. Speaking on the defection of Ribadu, the party spokesperson said, “the beauty of our politics is the freedom of association.
Though, no party would want to lose its members, but since APC is a strong party in Adamawa, the departure of one person cannot affect the fortunes and we have moved on.”
