Former Vice President AtikuAbubakar, has described the
current spate of  insecurity in the nation as worse than during the Nigerian Civil War era between 1967 and 1970.
Atiku made the assertion during an interview with the British Broadcasting
Cooperation (BBC) Hausa
Service
 monitored in Yola yesterday.
He identified lack of equipment,
training of personnel and shortage of funds as the major reasons for the
worsening of insecurity in the country.
Atiku said he believed that the funds
being injected into the security sector were being stolen by officials which
account for the lack of improvement of the security situation in the country.
“I believe officials charged with accounting for the funds are stealing them
that is the reason why we don’t see any improvement in the security situation
in the country as a result of which security personnel continue to use obsolete
equipment to police the society.”

He decried the situation were security
personnel only carry guns, stressing that “the practice where police go about
brandishing guns will not solve the insecurity bedevilling Nigeria.”
While defending his days in
government,Atiku said there was a marked difference in security indices between
policing in Nigeria.
“When I observed acute shortage of police personnel when I was the VP I called
the attention of my boss, the former president who directed me to act swiftly to
address the shortfall.
Immediately, we commence the recruitment
of 50,000 personnel on monthly basis for two years while making sure that the
police were equipped with modern working tools including guns as a result of
which social insecurity was minimal during our time,” he said.
