The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has announced that video uploads longer than three minutes on YouTube and TikTok will undergo censorship review as part of efforts to regulate online platforms.
Elakhe Fred, Head of the NFVCB’s Benin Centre, disclosed this yesterday in Benin and sought media support in promoting the board’s regulatory activities, especially its flagship initiative in Edo State.
Fred expressed concern over the board’s ability to regulate content on global platforms like YouTube and TikTok, noting that they present a significant regulatory challenge.
“By the end of the year, we expect a system where uploads longer than three minutes on YouTube and TikTok must undergo censorship review. It’s a gradual but deliberate process,” he said.
He added that the NFVCB is already engaging international stakeholders, including Netflix and YouTube, to enforce stricter upload rules, especially for children’s content.
Fred explained that the board is legally mandated to preview, censor, and classify films and videos before their public release.
