Each member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly in North-Central Nigeria takes home about a whopping N100 million per annum, it has been revealed.
The details were contained in documents obtained by News Express from the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), the group which recently raised the alarm that Nasarawa lawmakers are bleeding the struggling state dry and, in fact, earn more than their counterparts in other states and even those in the National Assembly.
The documents procured by CSNAC showed that each member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly currently takes home the following:
•Monthly allowances of N4 million, amounting to N48 million per annum
•Annual foreign trip allowance of N10 million, whether a trip was made or not
•Annual Constituency allowance of N30 million
“These bogus allowances are, again, exclusive of annual subvention collected to cover, car loans; accommodation allowance, vehicle maintenance, etc,” CSNAC Chairman Olanrewaju Suraju told News Express.
The documents also showed that Nasarawa State House of Assembly received N696,809,000 as subvention for the months of June – December 2011, a hefty N1,284,838,000 as the subvention in 2012 and was paid N969,786,000 for the period covering January – October 2013.
Desperate to block enquiries into their rape of the Nasarawa economy, the lawmakers employed what CSNAC described as “outright trickery” to dodge the group’s query on the issue, citing pending investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as an excuse for not entertaining questions in this regard.
Nasarawa is one of the less productive states which depend on federal allocations to meet their routine financial obligations.
