Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday made a volte face on his wellpublicised presidential ambition, declaring his resolve to run for a second term in office instead. He spoke about plans to consolidate on the achievements of his administration yesterday in Owerri, the Imo state capital, while swearing in seven new commissioners recently confirmed by the House of Assembly to replace commissioners, who resigned to pursue their political ambitions.
The governor also told those in attendance at the event that governorship aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state came out in their numbers, because they heard he would run for the presidency, assuring the people that he would not abandon or leave Imo people at the mercy of the PDP. Indicating his interest to run for a second term in office, Okorocha said he would not quit until he was satisfied that every family in the state is free from ignorance and poverty, telling the new appointees that he had invited them to partner with him to make the state better.The seven new commissioners sworn in yesterday include the daughter of the late governor of the state, Sam Mbakwe, Patience Mbakwe and seven new Local Government Caretaker Committee Chairmen. The new commissioners were also given portfolios by the governor at the end of their swearing-in. Chief Chidi Ibe is the new Commissioner for Information and Strategy; Mr. Obinna Mbata, Commissioner for Internally Generated Revenue. Others are Ms. Patience Mbakwe (Industry and Non-formal Sector); Mr. Victor Ogbonna Amadi, (Commerce and Market development); Mr. Ikechukwu Njoku, (Finance): Mr. Clinton Obiyom (Public Utilities and Public safety); Mrs. Mma Nzeribe, (Primary, Secondary and Non-formal Education).
The Local Government Transition Committee Chairmen swornin were those for Owerri North, Owerri West, Owerri Municipal, Ahiazu Mbaise, Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta and Oru East Local Government areas. Addressing the new appointees, the governor said he has released N3 billion for the renovation of all the local government headquarters in the state, adding that the council secretariats were left over the years to rot. He also informed the people that his administration would begin to renovate some old schools he said had produced great men and women in the state
