The National Universities Commission (NUC) has said that online degrees are not accepted in the country as of the moment but may change after the commission has fine-tuned its grading parameters.

Spokesperson of the commission, Ibrahim Usman Yakasai on Thursday said this while addressing newsmen in Abuja following a report published by Daily Trust titled: ‘Maryam Abacha American University of Niger, NUC square up over degrees.’

Yakasai who maintained that the country does not allow all part time cross border education said “we wish to restate that as the Quality Assurance Agency for Universities in Nigeria, the NUC is maintaining its stand that degrees from Maryam Abacha University will not be accepted in Nigeria.

“In Nigeria the duration for a full time degree programme is not less than three years for direct entry and at least six years for part time.”

He noted that NUC has never questioned the approval status of universities outside Nigeria, but will continue to ensure that only certificates obtained from reputable varsities are accepted in the country.

In similar vein, the commission, he said the commission have had cause to warn Nigerians against some others universities in West Africa coast including Republic of Benin, Togo and some in East Africa notable among them Garden City University College Kumasi Ghana, International University of East Africa, Kampala, Uganda, and Expam: Formation University Cotonou, and Benin Republic Nursing Science Degree (Part Time Basis).
