The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has reminded Nigerians on the need to desist from activities capable of putting them and their loved ones at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases on Valentine Day.
Valentine Day has over the years been a day when love is demonstrated among individuals through gestures of affection such as flowers, perfumes, cloths among other gift items.
The agency noted that the high rate of indiscriminate sexual activities perpetrated on Valentine Day has led to uninformed decision making among adolescents.
In a press statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday in Abuja, the chief communications officer, NACA, Mrs Toyin Aderibigbe said in its efforts to actualise a generation free from HIV/AIDS, the agency is advising that at this season of love, Nigerians should be principled and abstain from sex or indulge only in protected sex.
While reminding Nigerians of the ABC approach to HIV/AIDS prevention, Aderibigbe explained that this concept in its basic form suggests prevention, education, and health promotion which provide simple steps in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
