Tinubu Renames University Of Abuja To Yakubu Gowon University

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) to Yakubu Gowon University. He did this in honour of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), who recently marked his 90th birthday.

The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this decision to State House correspondents on Monday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.

According to Idris, the renaming recognizes Gowon’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s unity and his commitment to the country’s progress.

He also revealed that the proposal for the renaming will be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal approval.

“This decision reflects the government’s appreciation for the remarkable leadership and service General Gowon provided during a critical time in our nation’s history,” Idris said.

The renaming aligns with President Tinubu’s ongoing initiative to honor prominent figures whose legacies have shaped Nigeria’s history and development.
