Pro National Conference Organisation along with the Nigeria Consensus Group of Project Nigeria has warned that the current political tension in the country will break up the country unless the problems are addressed through a credible and non-partisan national conference.
The two groups said the proposed national conference, if conducted transparently, might be the last opportunity to save Nigeria from a break-up which a United States of America diplomat had earlier predicted would occur in 2015.
Their media assistant, Mr. Olubori Obafemi, in a statement in Lagos on Sunday, stated that the 2015 general elections would be explosive if the problems were not first resolved through a credible national conference.
The statement quoted the joint spokesperson for the two groups, Mr. Olawale Okunniyi, as saying that the groups’ apprehension about the future of the country was hinged on wide consultations.
It said, “We speak from a well informed perspective on this issue, especially based on profound consultations with experienced leaders and well meaning stakeholders in the country.
“The only saving grace today for Nigeria is a well organised, non partisan, genuine national conference if we must prevent the 2005 prediction of the United States about Nigeria’s disintegration from materialising.”
