The acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Hajia Maina Zakari, whose tenure as a National Commissioner in the commission ended on Tuesday, is to continue to act in that capacity until a substantive chairman is appointed for the commission.

A Presidency source told our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday that her tenure as a national commissioner had ended and that the letter issued to her on her new appointment supper ceded that of her appointment as a national commissioner.

According to the source, “Hajia Zakari remains the acting chairman of INEC. There is no ambiguity in her appointment, she is empowered by the president to be acting as the commission’s chairman pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.

“The president was aware that her tenure as a national commissioner ended on July 21 which is today (Tuesday) before he approved the appointment
as the acting chairman of the commission.”

There has been anxiety in the commission over the status of Zakari following the end of her tenure in the commission on Tuesday.

President Mohammudu Buhari had at the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past Chairman of the commission, Professor Atahiru Jega, named Hajia Zakari as the acting chairman.

Sources at the National Headquarters of the commission in Abuja had told the Tribune Online that everybody, including the woman herself, was in the dark about the leadership of the commission.
